Brian is a DJ and owner of Elevated Pulse, providing DJ, emcee, and event lighting services since 2004. His passion for people, event music mixing, and music in general was apparent as we spoke with him, and we had a great time just chatting about his work-life passion.
I61studio: How long have you been a DJ?
Brian: I’ve been a DJ professionally for 12 years – I started professionally when I was 15 years old. I was doing all my own high school dances and doing high school dances around the area.
I61studio: Did you have any formal education in DJ-ing?
Brian: No, I really was self-taught. It took a lot of practice – I used to practice four to five hours a day, just by myself. I started doing nightclubs when I was actually only 17 years old, and meeting other people that were DJs in the nightclub scene was a cool way for me to learn more too.
I61studio: Did you have any mentor figures that took you under their wing?
Brian: Absolutely. When I moved out here and started working in a record store, the owner became my mentor. He was a really big nightclub DJ and was traveling all over the country and all over the world. I got to see a lot of the club world, which was not really where I saw myself going as a profession.
I61studio: What was it that attracted you to weddings versus nightclubs?
Brian: Honestly, the environment really suits my personality because I’ve always been somebody that can get along with anyone. I think that’s really important with a wedding because you need to be able to just jump right in and adapt to the situation, no matter what cultural background the family comes from or the age or the style of music that they like.
I61studio: How would you describe the Elevated Pulse style?
Brian: What we are trying to do is to bridge the gap between style and professionalism. I know it sounds kind of weird but that’s really what we’re doing. We want to be someone that can get grandma on the dance floor and someone that’s 22 on the dance floor at the same time. And that’s what we do.
I61studio: What did you want to be as a kid?
Brian: A DJ. The first time I ever saw a DJ I was ten years old and I was at my sister’s going away party, and this guy was up there, and everyone was dancing, and he was having so much fun. I just wanted to know what that was he had so I asked him and he’s like: “It’s a mixer.” So for the next four years I asked my parents over and over “Can I have a mixer? I want a mixer!” Eventually they got me a mixer when I was 14 and I took my home stereo and a cd player and tried to mix music – obviously it was horrible, it sounded horrendous – but that was my starting point.
I61studio: Were your parents always supportive of your dream?
Brian: So supportive. And they still are. They never really were like: “This is a pipe dream” or “Why don’t you get a real job?” My dad, when I was younger, actually helped me set up at the high school dances.
I61studio: Do you remember that first event you did at 15 years old?
Brian: I do. The first event I ever did was a private birthday party and it went really well, actually. That to me was like: “Wow, I can do something with this.”
I61studio: What is your favorite type of music?
Brian: I love electronic dance music and everything in between whether its house, techno, electronica, dubstep – anything that has more of an energetic beat.
I61studio: How do you stay current with songs?
Brian: I belong to a record pool where we get songs before it’s even released onto the radio, so a lot of times I hear the songs that are big before they’re even big, which is cool.
I61studio: What have you found to be the most requested song for weddings?
Brian: Right now “We No Speak Americano” (by Yolanda Be Cool and DCUP) is probably one of them – I get requests for that song for every single wedding now, it’s crazy.
I61studio: What do you like to do in your free time?
Brian: Spend time with my wife and our little dog Brady. And I like to produce music, actually. I have a little studio at my house and I produce electronic music.
I61studio: What do you love most about doing what you do?
Brian: Honestly it sounds cheesy, but I love looking out and seeing people dancing and having a good time. I’m definitely blessed; I do what I love for a profession and that’s definitely amazing.
